0 "Broken Lands" -Kate Milford

Meine Liebeserklärung an dieses Buch! Ich liebe Steampunk(mäßiges) und ich liebe Märchengeschichten und in diesem Buch steckt von beidem etwas drin. Es ist total schwer einem Genre zuzuordnen, denn es kommen sehr viele unterschiedliche Elemente aus unterschiedliche Ecken und Enden zusammen, was aber im Endeffekt ein toller Mix ist, weil es nicht irgendwie typisch-irgendwas ist, sondern es um  Feuerwerk und Alchemie, Kartenspiel, Wanderer, den Teufel, ein verwinkeltes Hotel, Magie und vieles mehr geht. Das ganze spielt in New York und Brooklyn in der Zeit kurz nach dem amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg und dieser ganze Mix war perfekt.
Außerdem sind die Zeichnungen im Buch und das Cover wunderschön und passen sehr gut zur Geschichte.

My declaration of love to this book! I love Steampunk(like) stories and I love tales and in this book there was a lot of both in it. It's very difficult to sort it into a genre, because there are many different elements of different corners coming together in this book which then is a great mixture, because it's not just written like it's typically-something, but about firework, alchemy, card games, wanderers, the devil, a hotel of nooks and crannies, magic and a lot more. Everything is set in New York and Brooklyn in the time just after the civil war and the whole mixture was perfect.
Also the drawings in the book and the cover are beautiful and fit good with the story.

2 "Jeanne" -Ursula Flacke

Ich hätte echt nicht gedacht, dass mich ein historischer Roman mal soo langweilen kann. Vor allem, es geht um Jeanne d'Arc, das kann doch nicht so langweilig sein, oder? Und ich mag Geschichte. Geschichte ist interessant und aufregend, wenn es darauf ankommt.

I'd never thought that a historical novel can bore me so much. Especially since it's about Jeanne d'Arc, that can't be boring, can it? And I like history, history is interesting and exciting when it's about that.

Aber das hat dieses Buch mich einfach gelangweilt. Problem: Überall sind Fußnoten. Ich hätte sie einfach ignorieren können, aber das habe ich nicht. Stattdessen habe ich auf jede einzelne Fußnote einen Blick geworfen. Vielleicht war das auch der Fehler, ich weiß es nicht. Jedenfalls, in den Fußnoten standen Zitate aus irgendeiner historischen Quelle. Als Beweis, dass alles sauber recherchiert war. Naja, auch wenn, soweit ich das verstanden hatte, alles einer einzigen Quelle entnommen war? Das Problem war, dass wenn in der Handlung irgendetwas passierte, dass dann in den Fußnoten eine Zeile aus irgendeiner historischen Quelle stand, in der exakt das gleiche drinstand. Nicht wortwörtlich. Aber um den Inhalt des Buches wiederzugeben, hätten die Fußnoten beinahe gereicht.

But this book simply bored me. Problem: Footnotes everywhere. I could have ignored them, but I didn't. Instead I looked up every sigle footnote. Maybe that was he mistake, I don't know. Anyway, the footnotes contained quotes from some historical source. To proof that everything had been researched properly. Well, even though, as far as I've got it, everything had been taken from one single source? The Problem was, that anytime when there was action, in the footnotes there was something from that historical source in which it by meaning said exactly the same. Not verbatim. But to depict the book's content the footnote could have already been enough.

3 "Luther" -Moritz Stetter

Martin Luther als Graphic Novel? Jep. Büchereifund. Ein kurzer Blick sagte mir das das Buch in Ordnung sein würde, denn ein Graphic Novel besteht aus Bildern und dann darf man auch nach dem Cover urteilen ;) (Nein, eigentlich tue ich das ja niieee...) also griff ich zu. Es war recht schnell durch, denn die ganze Geschichte kennt man ja schon (Selbst als Katholikin ;) von der Schule her in- und auswendig. Eigentlich war da auch nix besonderes dabei. Storytechnisch hatte man ja alles schon mal gehört. Ihr wisst schon, Gewitter, heilige Anna, Mönchsgelübde, usw.
Also lege ich hier mal das Augenmerk auf die Zeichnungen (bei Graphic Novels darf man das) und den Aufbau des Buches.

Martin Luther as a Graphic Novel? Yep. A library discovery. A short glance told me that it would be okay since Graphic Novels consist of books and then you're allowed to judge it by the cover ;) (No, I never rate by cover,  do I?...) so I grabbed it. I had was quite fast through, you know the whole story (even as a catholic ;) because of school by heart. Actually there was nothing special about it. You've heard the whole story before. You know, thunderstorm, holy Anna, the vow to become a monk and so on. So I'll turn my attention to the drawings (In Graphic Novels you're allowed to do that) and the construction of the book.

Die Zeichnungen fand ich gut. Sie stellen eigentlich die wilde Fantasie und die vielen Wahnvorstellungen die die Menschen damals hatten gut dar und man kann diese dabei nachvollziehen. Ziemlich wilde Bilder von Teufeln, Hölle, Fegefeuer und was den Leuten sonst noch alles eingefallen ist. Gerade in der Hinsicht konnte das Buch ziemlich viel bieten. Außerdem muss ich zugeben, dass ich zwar zeichnen kann, aber eben doch nicht so gut und dass die Zeichnungen alle einfach sehr gelungen sind. Zum Bilder angucken jedenfalls sehr schön.

I think the drawings were good. They illustrate the wild fantasies and many hallucinations the people had back then well and you can reenact these very well. Quite wild pictures of devils, hell purgatory and what else the people came up with. Especially from this point the book could offer a lot. Also I have to admit that I actually can draw, but not that good and that the drawings are all very felicitous. To look at pictures at least very nice.

Das ganze Buch war ein bisschen verwirrend weil es nicht chronologisch aufgbaut war, bzw. weil es zwischendrin immer wieder mal ein paar Zeitsprünge gab und dann wieder Stellen an denen alles einfach der Reihenfolge nach erzählt wurde, sodass ich einfach nicht ganz durchgeblickt habe, weil es an einer Stelle um Dinge ging, die vor etwas passiert sind, das schon vor etwas passiert ist, das schon erzählt worden war (Soweit ich das verstanden habe. Ich bin mir dabei nicht sicher. Wie gesagt, es war irgendwie verwirrend.)

The whole book was a bit confusing becaue it wasn't sorted chronologically respectively because inbetween there were some leaps in time and then again passages in which everything was simply told in order, so that I simply didn't get it all, because at one part something was told, that had happened before something that had already been told (As far as I've understood. I'm still not sure. As I wrote, it was somehow confusing.)

Insgesamt stellt Moritz Stetter Luthers Leben dar, fügt aber wenig hinzu, es gibt zwar hin und wieder einige Stellen die tatsächlich Interpretation sind, aber hauptsächlich waren es doch reine Nacherzählungen, nur eben mit Bildern, bzw. die Bilder enthielten mehr Interpretation als der Text. Trotzdem war es interessant deshalb immerhin die dreieinhalb Delphine.

By all Moritz Stetter illustrates Luthers life but doesn't add much, sometimes there are some parts that are really interpretations but mainly it was still pure renarration with pictures respecively the pictures contained more interpretation than the text. Still it was interesting so at least three dolphins.

2 "Der Name der Rose" /"The Name Of The Rose" -Umberto Eco

 Ich muss euch etwas beichten. Es ist wichtig, denn es hat mit einem Buch zu tun, und Bücher sind, wie ihr alle wisst, wichtig. Sehr wichtig. So. Also. Es fällt mir schwer es auszusprechen, denn es ist so... ach, ich sag's einfach: Ich führe Selbstgespräche mit Adson von Melk. Ja, Adson, aus "Der Name der Rose". Tolles Buch, toller Film. Ja, denke manche jetzt vielleicht, tue ich doch auch mit Buchfiguren. Ja, denkste. Nicht auf Latein. Haltet mich jetzt bitte für verrückt, denn ich bin ein dringender Fall für den Psychiater und brauche schleunigst Hilfe. Dieses Buch könnte mich dazu verleiten, zum ersten Mal in meinem Leben böse zu werden und eine Buch, das ich ausgeliehen habe, nicht zurückzugeben. Es gehört zu den Büchern, bei denen man weiß, dass man sie unbedingt wieder und wieder lesen will und es macht richtig süchtig (Zumindest, wenn schon vorher die gleichen Bedingungen herrschen wie bei mir, nämlich Buchsucht, Latinitis und leichte Verrücktheit, so, dass selbst die besten Freunde sagen, dass man seltsam ist -ehrlich Freunde dürfen das) Und das ist ein Fall für meine wiederundwieder Leseliste, von Büchern, die ich immer wieder lesen kann, ohne dass sie schlechter werden, weil sie einfach so einen Hauch von Universalität haben. Manche Bücher sind spannend und toll, aber nur Einwegbücher -so einen Fall hatte ich neulich, davon werdet ihr noch hören -aber andere kann man öfters lesen.

I have to confess something. It's important, because it has to do with books, and as you know, books are important. Very important. So. Well. It's difficult for me to say it and... let me tell you right now: I'm monologizing to Adson from Melk. Yes, Adson from "The Name Of The Rose". Great Book, great movie. Yeah, some might think, I also do that with book charakters. You wish! Not in Latin. Think I'm crazy, I'm a urgent case for the psychiatrist and I need right away help. This book might drive me to become evil for the first time in my life and to keep a book that I've lent for myself. It belongs to those books, where you know, that you want to read them again and again and it's really addicting (At least, when there are the same condition like in me, as a book addiction, latinitis, and a bit of craziness, so even your friends tell that you're crazy -honest friends are allowed to do that)
And this is a case for my readagainandagain list of book I could read again and again, without them to get worse, because they have this hit of catholicity. Many books are great and thrilling, but only one-way books -I had such a case lately, you'll hear about it -but others can be reread often.

Und, was glaubt ihr wie ich dieses Buch fand? War es...

Ja. Ihr habt es erraten.  Einfach dumm, dass es nicht mir gehört. Kennt ihr auch dieses Gefühl? Ihr habt ein tolles Buch gelesen und es gehört euch nicht? Ja, so geht's mir gerade.

Yes. You got it. What a pity that it's not mine. Do you know that feeling? You've read a great book and it doesn't belong to you? That how I feel now.

Es ist verstörend, wenn man an all das denkt, was in dem Buch passiert, das traurige Ende und die Umstände einer Zeit, in der ich wahrscheinlich in Nullkommnix verbrannt worden wäre. Alles so schön beeindruckend, weil es nicht darauf ansetzt, eine tolle Geschichte zu erzählen, bei der man selber gerne beteiligt wäre -ich würde gerne einmal die Orte sehen, an denen die Geschichte spielt, aber niemals würde ich die Handlung erleben wollen -und wenn wir ehrlich sind, dann sind die meisten Bücher in letzter Zeit eben darauf ausgelegt, dem Leser zu gefallen und eine aufregende Geschichte zu erzählen, nicht dass ich solche Bücher nicht gerne lese, aber es ist doch irgendwie erfrischend, ein Buch zu lesen, das irgendwie nicht so simpel und trotzdem leicht zu lesen. Einfach nur eine historischer Roman, ein Krimi, eine Liebesgeschichte, ein Entwicklungsroman? Ein weiteres Thema zu dem Buch, das man breittreten könnte. Ich kann eigentlich nicht viel zu diesem Buch schreiben, außer dass ich es mag, denn ich habe nicht viel auszusetzen.
 Alles, was mich gestört hat ist der Zeit geschuldet, in der Buch spielt und nicht dem Buch selbst und ich finde es toll, wie Umberto Eco sich eisern daran hält. Ich finde es schade, dass so viele historische Romane heutzutage nicht mehr realistisch über die Vergangenheit erzählen. Jedenfalls sollten sie sich dann nicht mehr als historisch bezeichnen. Ja, und ob man das hier noch als Rezension oder nicht doch als Liebeserklärung bezeichnen sollte, weiß ich auch nicht. Flüssiger Schreibstil, gute, nachvollziehbare Figuren, eine logische Handlung -dass man dass überhaupt nennen muss, denn eigentlich sollte das eher eine Vorraussetzung sein... wie auch immer, fünf Delphine.

It's bothering, when you think of all that happenings in the book, the sad end, circumstances of a time, in which I would have been burnt at the stake in no time at all. Everything is impressing, because it doesn't want to tell a great story you would liked to experience yourself -I would love to see the places of the story, but never wanted to experience the happenings in this place -and if we're honest, most book lately are written to entertain, not that I don't lie to read such books, but still it's delightful to read a book that somehow isn't simple, but still easy to read. Just a historical novel, a detective story, a love story, a coming-of-age novel? Anothe topic you could expatiate upon. I actually can't write much about this book, except that I like it, since I don't have much to submit.
Everything that disturbed me was due to the time the book is set in and not the book itself I think it's great how Umberto Eco keeps grimly to it. It's a pity how so many historical novels nowadays don't tell realisticly about the past. At least the shouldn't call themselves historical then. Yes, and if you shouldn't call this a Review, but a declaration of love, I don't know. A fluent writing style, comprehensible charakters, a logical plot -that this has to be ever mentioned...
however, five dolphins.
